Busy day of doubleheaders for boys, girls basketball

Three more nights of high school basketball remain before the regular season comes to a close and the playoff brackets are finalized. 

Friday can be used only as a make-up date for games that are postponed on Thursday. The Heal Point standings will be finalized Friday or Saturday, the preliminary playoff dates are Feb. 13 and 14, and the North basketball tournament for classes B, C and D gets underway Feb. 16 at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor.

The Katahdin boys make the trip north to take on Easton at 7 p.m. in a matchup between Class D North playoff-bound squads looking to strengthen their positions in the Heal Point standings. The Cougars are 12-4 and in third place and the Bears are 10-6 and in seventh. Katahdin won the first matchup played Dec. 28 by a score of 63-57.

Greater Houlton Christian Academy has a makeup game at Van Buren at 5 p.m.

In other action, Washburn is at Hodgdon and Wisdom is at Fort Fairfield for girls/boys doubleheaders, with both beginning at 5:30 p.m. Southern Aroostook is at East Grand for a doubleheader, 5 p.m. girls/ 6:30 p.m. boys.

Scores from the light schedule of games played Monday are as follows:

Central Aroostook girls 68, Van Buren 15 — Maci Beals drained four 3-pointers and finished with 18 points as the Panthers raced to a 25-2 lead after the first quarter and eased past the Crusaders in Van Buren.

Kayla Martin added 16  and Kassie Levesque eight for CA, which finished with a 12-6 regular season record.

Kylie LaPlante paced Van Buren (4-13) with eight points.

Houlton 68, Calais 54 — At Calais Monday, the Shires notched a key win over the Blue Devils to remain perfect on the season. Kolleen Bouchard had 40 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for the Shires, while Aspen Flewelling added 12 points on four 3-pointers and Teagan Ewings added nine.

For Calais, Lauren Cook had 25 and Prue Maxwell added 11.
