DANFORTH, Maine — The East Grand Outdoor education class recently took part in a three-day and two-night winter camp outing in the Katahdin Woods and Waters Monument property near the East branch of the Penobscot River.

Students cross country skied 14 miles round-trip breaking trail on the way in with sleds in tow containing their personal, community gear and food.

The destination was the Big Spring Brook cabin with a wood stove for heat and propane lanterns and cook stove. Students took part in all phases of the experience including planning, physical conditioning, cooking meals, building snow shelters, tree identification and a visit to Grand Falls on the return trip.

This spring students will take part in numerous canoe races including the East Grand Adventure Race on May 12. The annual event draws people of all ages from around the state and beyond. The new family division is a great way to take part which includes all race legs and challenges except the biking portion.  More information is available on the school’s website.
