Wilderness Walk for Warriors event is Saturday

HOULTON, Maine — The Wilderness Walk for Warriors will once again honor local Maine Heroes with a half-marathon and 5-kilometer road race.

On Saturday, May 26, starting at 11 a.m., the Honor Run half-marathon and a 5K road race will take place at the Millar Civic Center in Houlton.

According to Chris Robinson, event organizer, Wilderness Walk for Warriors is a non-profit organization comprised of volunteers who are dedicated to assisting veterans, service members and or their families; as well as honoring our Maine fallen heroes.

The marathon and 5K serves a prelude for the group’s upcoming hike of the Appalachian Trail. Each year in July, Wilderness Walk for Warriors forms a team that hikes through the 100 Mile Wilderness (Monson to the top of Mt. Katahdin) totalling 120 miles. Team members raise funds through pledges and various fundraising events. In turn, the funds raised are used to directly assist Veterans/Service Members, and or their families.

Wilderness Walk for Warriors blends civilians and military members for the benefit of those who have served their country. All of the money raised goes directly to veterans and service members.

This year’s hike will see each team member carrying a Houlton Rocks painted stone depicting a Fallen Maine Hero. This year, the group hopes to have more than two dozen hikers undertake this extremely difficult endeavor. This is a 10-day hike through the most difficult section of the Appalachian trail without any source of re-supply. Its goal is to raise money for those who have served, and are serving, to protect freedom and way of life.
