CARIBOU, Maine — The Caribou Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary recently held its annual poetry contest on the theme “What America Means to Me” for local students.

Ninety students from Caribou Middle School participated and gathered at a special assembly, where Auxiliary members presented the reading “I Am Your Flag” and a report on the history of the American flag.

Each student received a pencil with the Pledge of Allegiance on it, a ruler with pictures of all of the presidents of the United States, a booklet on flag etiquette and a small American flag.

Naliyah Love won first place, with Gwen Anderson earning second place and Simon Disy, third place. Those top winners received certificates and monetary awards, while the rest of the top 10 earned Honorable Mention certificates.

Love read her poem to all present.
