Local Girls on the Run teams ready to celebrate in style

“I’m a winner because I joined Girls on the Run. Today wasn’t about the balloons, music and special treats. Today was about being with my team and reaching our goal,”  said 9-year-old Olive Gregg of Mapleton after completing her practice 5K May 18 with the Presque Isle Girls on the Run team.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a nationally-renowned, physical-activity based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in grades 3-5.

In its second year in Aroostook County, both the Presque Isle and Caribou teams are gearing up for their end of year celebration 5K on June 10 at Mantle Lake Park in Presque Isle. Both teams are in the final weeks of their 10-week program, led by trained GOTR volunteer coaches, and are excited to come together for this spectacular celebratory event.

GOTR girls, their running buddies, community participants, volunteers and spectators are all encouraged to join in the festive spirit. Silly socks, tutus and happy hair are just a start.

Organization leaders are still seeking volunteers for cheer stations and it’s not too late to register as a participant. This untimed 5K event is all about completion. However long it takes a girl to reach the finish line, she is a winner.
