PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Cubby recently presented a $3,100 donation to Larry Camerlin, president and founder of Angel Flight Northeast, to benefit patients who need flights to medical appointments.
Camerlin flew to Presque Isle from New York to accept the donation.
“In our world, that is a pretty big deal,” said Cindy Johnson, president of The Cubby Thriftstores and the CubbyGives program.
“I know some people fear with the loss of PenAir patient flights will cease,” Johnson said via email. “Through the generosity of pilots who volunteer their time and fuel, patients in Northern Maine will not go without.”
“Angel Flight NE greatly appreciates the continued support from The Cubby Thriftstores,” said Camerlin.
“With the support of programs like CubbyGives and the generosity of their patrons, we can ensure that distance is never an obstacle for the patients we serve throughout Maine,” he added. “Thank you again to everyone who supports the efforts of The Cubby Thriftstores.”
Cindy and her husband, Chris Johnson, founded The Cubby Thriftstores in honor of their son, Kaleb “Cubby” Johnson. Kaleb has neurofibromatosis Type 1, where tumors grow on nerves, and he has flown on Angel Flight trips to some of his own medical appointments.
The stores designate a portion of their proceeds to the CubbyGives program to help support the needs of families who have children with life-threatening or chronic illnesses. Funds can help cover lodging, food, fuel, medical equipment and related expenses.
The Cubby operates stores in Caribou, Presque Isle, Madawaska and Houlton.
