From the Bunkers – Week of July 25, 2018

HOULTON, Maine — Life goes on and a few showers this past week have helped the fairways. This week appears to   be a damp one with showers and thunder showers throughout the week. Come out and take advantage of the good days if you can.

The golf course and Lakeside Restaurant will be closed on Wednesday, July 25, as we host the St. John Valley Senior Men’s Golf Association tournament. We are in search of several volunteers, men and women, to help with registration and assisting incoming golfers. This would only be a couple hours, 7-9 a.m. or noon to 2 p.m. Please call the proshop to sign up. Your help is appreciated.

The Men’s Twilight League continues with Bob Gray and Jerry York leading the early McIlroy division by six points over three other teams. The later Spieth division is lead by Tony Marino and Bruce Avery, with a 6.5 point advantage over two teams.

The Ladies Association plays on Tuesday with a morning flight and an afternoon flight. Call the proshop at 532-2662 if you would like to participate. Coming this Sunday will be our third GFL/ Members Scramble Tournament starting at 2 p.m. This is a chance for beginning golfers to play with  existing members in friendly competition. Members and first time golfers please sign up in the clubhouse or call and we’ll put you on the list. All are welcome.

The County Open will be played at Houlton Golf Course on Aug. 11, and at VaJoWa Golf Course on Sunday, Aug. 12 with a Scramble. There is still plenty of time to sign up online or at the clubhouses.

Our Club Championship has been moved to the weekend of Aug. 25-26. It will be 18 holes each day, in several handicap divisions. The Presidents Cup will run in conjunction with the Club Championship. This tournament is open to all members. The more players, the more your chance to win.

As mentioned, The Lakeside Restaurant will be closed for the St. John Seniors Tournament on Wednesday. They will be back Thursday and of course the Summer Fest on Friday, featuring Paul LaPointe playing his oldies selections that encourage sing alongs. So call Nancy at 694-9494 for reservations.

It’s just a few minutes out from town, so grab a couple friends and drive out for a quick nine or play eighteen if you have time. And I will see you on the course.
