HOULTON, Maine — It was a beautiful week in the County for golf. The weekend culminated in the playing of the County Open at Houlton and VaJoWa golf courses. And just in time the weather broke, the humidity fell off and we had great conditions for the tournament.

The Men’s League is in its final week of regular play. The McIlroy division has Bob Gray and Jerry York back in front by one point over brother Dick York and Paul Adams. Speith division has Tony Marino and Bruce Avery with an eleven point lead over Bill Dwyer and Ted Pettingill.

The golf course will be closed on Wednesday until after 4 p.m. as we host the St. John Senior Ladies Tournament. We could use a few volunteers to help with the ladies getting their clubs unloaded and finding their golf cart assignments. The Lakeside Restaurant will be providing the meal for the ladies so they will not be open to the public until after 6 p.m.

Coming events include the Couples Scramble to be held on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 3 p.m. This event is for all players of all abilities. Put your team together or sign up individually and we will put you together. Please sign up by Friday so we can plan. The Club Championship will be held Aug. 25 and 26. Please sign up by noon on Friday for pairings. Call the clubhouse to sign up.

The Babe Caron Memorial Member/Guest Tournament will be held over the Labor Day weekend. It will be limited to 30 teams and there are only a few spots left open, so call the proshop to get your team registered.

As Junior Golf program will be ending on Monday, the high school golf season will soon be underway. Their practices will be in the morning and competitive matches will start at 3:30 p.m. later in the month.
