The eighth annual Maine Basketball Hall of Fame golf scramble held Saturday, Aug. 4, at Aroostook Valley Country Club in Fort Fairfield turned out to be a huge success.

Teams from as far away as Bar Harbor and Bangor joined several local teams from Aroostook County and Canada to take part in the benefit tournament.

Many Hall of Fame members played or were in attendance, including hall founder Skip Chappelle, Steve Condon, Tom Pelletier and two of this year’s inductees, Billy McAvoy and Dwight Hunter, who were honored during the event.

A special award was presented to the Collins family of Caribou for their support of the Hall of Fame through their donation of custom-built trophy cases which are on display at the Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, which houses the Maine Basketball Hall of Fame.

An auction of 23 items, which ranged from Green Monster seats from Fenway Park to Boston Celtics tickets and golf stay and play packages at various country clubs throughout the state, raised over $7,000.

The team of Jeff Perley, Steve Hansen, Dave Bolster and Sheldon Sappier won the $500 prize for accumulating the low gross score.

Second gross went to Warren Tremblay, Norval Sappier, Dave Dove and Scrappy Perley; third gross to Steve Clark, Bob Russell, Harry Orser and Adam Orser; and fourth gross to Greg Cyr, Kelly O’Leary, Chad Cyr and Keegan Cyr.

The foursome of Graydon McCrum, Galen McCrum, Bob Miller and Erwin Doherty claimed the $500 prize for the low net score.

Jim Carter, Tom Carter, Merrill Hersey and Bob Duprey took second net, while Kerby Doughty, George McKay and Vaughn Nicholas captured third net. Al O’Neal, Binks Albert, Larry Davenport and Carroll Dubois placed fourth.

Closest to pin winners were John McCrea, Terry Hopkins, Rob Hanson, Peter Murray and Himie Towle. Longest drive contest winners were Sheldon Sappier and Judy Dombroski.

Mixed division winners were Libby Gardner, Danielle Cox, Matt Cox and P.J. Saunders.
