Utility wants another hike

To the editor:

Emera Maine is at it again.  They must think that rural Mainers have deep pockets. Believe it or not, for the fourth time in just six years, Maine’s second-largest electric utility company is asking for a rate increase and it’s a big one: a 19-percent increase in the distribution rate and a 7-percent increase in your total electric bill.  I, for one, am outraged.

Maybe Emera Maine thinks we aren’t paying attention.  Maybe they think we don’t notice that our bills just keep going up along with the cost of food, prescription drugs and so many other things.  Maybe they just don’t care that the increase in their rates over and over again has an impact.

What it means is that some of us aren’t going to be able to heat our homes.  It means that some Maine families are going to suffer.

Apparently, Emera Maine is far more interested in their bottom line.  Four rate hikes in six years is too many. This is too much. I hope the Public Utilities Commission doesn’t fall for it.  Shame on you, Emera.
