Mapleton fifth graders present ‘Great Americans’

Mapleton School Participates in Book Award Program

The Mapleton Elementary fifth-grade classes on Tuesday. Feb. 12 performed in their annual school play.  This year’s play and musical titled, “Great Americans of the Twentieth Century.” The play’s storyline is based on an awards program that recognizes outstanding twentieth century Americans and their achievements. To guide the audience through the awards program, two young girls Kayla Libby and Denver Miller acted as masters of ceremonies.  Bringing some comedy relief in the program, two roving reporters were played by Colt Putnam and Carter Vigue. Throughout the show, several songs were sung by the actors backed up a blend of students who were not playing on the stage at the time.

At the beginning of the century, there was Wilbur and Orville Wright played by Tyler Hart and Ethan Dionne.  Ernest Hemingway, played by Marion Young, made several appearances during the play as America’s favorite author.  Walt Disney and Rachel Carson, played by Kason Bua and Mackenzie McLaughlin, appeared together followed by Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks, played by Nicholas Lavigne and Halley Hines.  

Then the award for America’s most favorite Roosevelt as Teddy, played by Theodore Donovan, and Franklin D. attempted to outdo one another for this award only to have Eleanor Roosevelt to be recognized as America’s favorite Roosevelt.  Celebrated artists were Jackson Pollock, played by Lucas Wood, Georgia O’Keefe, played by Kaylee Harris, and Ahol, played by Hattie Cogswell, discussed their painting styles. In the area of music, Louis Armstrong, played by Logan Caron, received the America’s Favorite Musician Award.  Cesar Chavez, played by Griffin Berry was recognized for his work on the farm labor movement.

Henry Ford, played by Eli Jandreau, was recognized for his achievement in creating the assembly line in American industry.  An Assembly Li8ne Rap was sung by Keira Tompkins and Cameron Locke. Then there were America’s big thinkers and inventors, namely Albert Einstein, played by Benjamin Straetz, and Thomas Edison, played by Varish Sood. The last of America’s favorites was the challenge of the best “Babes.”  There were was Babe Ruth, played by McKayla Guerrette, of baseball fame and Babe Didrikson, played by Keira Tompkins, of track and field and golf legend.

The musical was quite a success as a result of the students’ hard work and the parents, school staff and other teachers whose support of the play made it such a success.

Fundraising Dinner at West Chapman Church

Maralee Gardiner of the West Chapman Advent Christian Church invites everyone for dinner on a cold winter’s night.  A dinner of hot delicious lasagna and all the fixings will be served. The West Chapman Advent Christian Church is hosting this fundraising lasagna dinner on Feb. 23 at 5:30 p.m. at 3466 W Chapman Rd, Chapman. Come enjoy the sweet fellowship and the great food.
