Owls softball splits opening games

MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina — The University of Maine at Presque Isle split a pair of games on Monday to open up the 2019 season on their southern trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Owls fell 3-1 to Frostburg State but beat Sarah Lawrence College 12-3 in the second game of the day.

In the first game, UMPI struggled to get the bats going but carried a one run lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. UMPI scored the game’s first run in the top of the 4th when Jordi Legassie (Senior, Presque Isle) scored on a Roni Shaw (Sophomore, Payette, Idaho) groundout and RBI.

UMPI had three hits on the day with Sarah Duncklee (Jr. Kearny, Arizona) hitting a double, while Frostburg State had nine hits. The Bobcats winning pitcher Katelyn Mehrling (4-1) went the distance giving up three hits and striking out three. Brookelynn Garcia (So. Torrance, California) pitched the first four innings for the Owls and Marissa Valdivia-Reagle (0-1) tossed two relief innings taking the loss.

In the second game, Garcia (1-0) got the win for the Owls going six innings and freshman Savannah Borland (Brownsville, Texas) recorded her first career strikeout while pitching the seventh inning.

Legassie went 3 for 3 at the plate, as did Mel Terry (Sophomore, Fresno, California) to pace the Owls.
