From the Bunkers – Week of July 15, 2019

HOULTON, Maine — It is wonderful to live in Maine. Especially in Aroostook County. This is the weather we have been waiting for. Occasional rain, mostly in the evening, and a little wind to dry things out. The first few greens were punched and sanded this week. I have not heard any negative comments.

The rest of the greens will be done this week. This will give the course sufficient time to recover for the next big tournament in August. We have begun treating the course in the early morning hours to combat the overgrowth clover and other broadleaf weeds. This is all done to produce the excellent playing conditions we have come to expect at Houlton Golf Course.

This coming Sunday, July 21, we will have another Golf for Life/ Member Scramble. This tournament was started several years ago to help new golfers meet and play with current members in a social atmosphere. It will be nine holes starting at 2 p.m. Registration is from 1:30-2 p.m. The only requirement is that each team must have a minimum of one member and GFL player on each team. There is no charge for players and hor’dourves will be supplied by Bill and Nancy at the Lakeside Restaurant. Please call the clubhouse by Friday with your team or individual and we will make sure everybody is on a team.

The Ladies Association had a fun round of Bingo, Bango, Bongo. Four groups of Ladies participated. The match this week will be fewest putts, with a meal served afterwards. Call the proshop to sign up. The more players, the more fun for all.

The Men’s Twilight League continues Monday evening. Last week, we had some exciting matchups resulting in a bit of a shakeup in the standings. Junior Golf will be at the course again on Monday morning. Please respect our future golfers as they learn the game and etiquette of the game we love.

Coming Aug. 10-11 will be the Annual County Open to benefit the Health Services Foundation. Call Lori Weston at 521-2147 to sign up for either the medal tournament at Houlton or the Four person Scramble at Vajowa or both. More info can be obtained there also. The Club Championship will be played the weekend of Aug 17-18.

The Lakeside Restaurant is catering the Dinner for the County Open on Saturday, Aug. 10. Bill and Nancy are introducing a new dinner menu this week. Come on out and try the new items. Call Nancy for reservations at 694-9494.

As we head into this week on the golf course, enjoy your round and the company of those you play with. Please replace your divots in the fairways and repair your ball marks on the greens. This will help keep our course looking and playing as one of the finest courses around. And I will see you out on the course.

Houlton Community Golf Course is located on 6 Country Club Drive in New Limerick. For more information on the course call 532-2662, email houltongolf@gmail.com or visit their website www.houltongolf.com.
