Soccer competition winners will advance to Northern Maine district contest

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine— Eight kids under age 14 will advance to the Northern Maine district soccer contest in Ellsworth after winning spots at the Presque Isle competition on Sunday, Sept. 22. 

About 23 kids showed up for penalty kick soccer shoot competition, hosted by the Presque Isle Elks Lodge over the weekend, to put their skills to the test in a penalty shoot-out contest. 

Kevin Sjoberg, the Presque Isle Elks Lodge soccer shoot director, said that turnout for the competition was a little less than last year. 

In the girls under 8 years old division, Layla King of Mars Hill took home first place and Aaron Cloukey of Presque Isle won in the boys under 8 division. 

Emily Collins of Mapleton, won for the 8- and 9-year-olds group, Sidney Tawfall of Presque Isle, for the 10- and 11-year-olds and Grace Ellis- of Easton, in the 12 and 13-year-olds division. 

Additionally, Gavin Tawfall of Presque Isle placed first for the 12- and 13-year-olds group, Josiah Mondello of Presque Isle in the 8- and 9-year-olds and Connor Lamoreau in the 10 and 11-year-olds division. 

Sjoberg said that the winners from this contest in each of their respective divisions have earned the right to compete against other players throughout Northern Maine at the next competition.

The Northern Maine district contest is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Ellsworth Elementary-Middle school.
