PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Local Scouts and their families are urging people to help fight food insecurity, an issue that continues to affect numerous individuals and families in Aroostook County.
On Saturday, Nov. 2, members of Presque Isle’s Troop 171 and Cub Scout Pack 171 and Mapleton’s Cub Scout Pack 170 will distribute 1,000 paper bags and flyers to homes in both communities. The flyers tell of the Scouting for Food project and encourage people to fill the bags with nonperishable food items. The Scouts will collect and donate the food to Grace Interfaith Food Table in Presque Isle on Saturday, Nov. 9, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Scouting for Food is a nationwide project that the Boy Scouts of America began in 1988 as a way to address issues of food insecurity in local communities. Scouts across the country have collected more than 60 million items of food since the project’s inception.
Kathy Peary, whose husband Tom Peary is the Scoutmaster for Pack and Troop 171, said that last year the Scouts collected 1,800 food items for GIFT.
“Serving others has always been something that Scouts do best. They consider this good turn to be one that will make a difference in our community,” Peary said.
