HOULTON, Maine — The Houlton-Hodgdon-Southern Aroostook-Katahdin Black Hawks hockey squad continues to search for that elusive first win on the year.

On Saturday, the Black Hawks (0-4) came close to notching that first win against visiting Messalonskee, but ultimately fell short 5-4 in overtime.

Cayden Campbell, Kurtis Reynolds, Josh McGillicuddy, Alex Dunn and Noah Reynolds each had solo goals for the Black Hawks, while Jason Collett had two assists and Nate DeLucca, Noah Reynolds, Kurtis Reynolds and Gavin Vining each had one.

Dylan Cunningham had four goals to lead Messalonskee.

Elijah Matheson made 23 saves on 29 shots on goal for the Black Hawks.

“The team played their best game of the season,” coach Joel Trickey said. “We’ve made huge strides in our offensive zone play as we get more comfortable with the systems and tactics we’re using. Although it was a heartbreaking way to end the game, we feel the improvements we’re seeing will pay off in a win sooner rather than later.”
