Elks continue flag tradition

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 have assumed responsibility for the tradition of posting flags in the community on holidays.

Beginning on May 25, Memorial Day, the Elks will now post American flags along the commercial areas on Main Street and State Street in Presque Isle, during daylight hours without precipitation, on several holidays of national importance.

This tradition was begun by the American Legion Post 88 in Presque Isle more than 50 years ago. On account of its aging membership, the Legion was unable to continue posting the flags, and the group turned over its inventory of some 250 flags to the Elks.

Lodge 1954 will ensure that the flags wave in downtown Presque Isle on the following holidays, weather permitting: Patriots Day in April; Armed Services Day and Memorial Day in May; Flag Day on June 14; Independence Day on July 4; Labor Day in September; Indigenous People’s Day in October; Veterans Day on Nov. 11; and Thanksgiving.

Elks Exalted Ruler Reuben Caron said, “It is particularly fitting that the Presque Isle Elks assume this tradition established by the American Legion in this city.  The Elks are a service organization which is uniquely American. One must be an American citizen to become a member of the Elks.  One of the organization’s primary objectives is to promote patriotism.”

Caron added, “Flag Day, June 14, was first recognized and celebrated by the Elks, who continue to hold commemorative events on Flag Day annually. The Presque Isle Elks are proud to continue this wonderful tradition and look forward to being able to do so for decades to come.”
