Residents now able to check out books at Cary Library

HOULTON, Maine — Book lovers rejoice, you will soon be able to pick up a hard copy of your favorite novel.

Starting July 6, Cary Library will reopen for business from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on an appointment-only basis for those people who want to check out physical copies of books, according to Librarian Linda Faucher.

“We are also currently doing remote checkout the same as we had done before we were mandated to shut down,” she explained. “However, we will only have the remote checkout available on Saturday mornings.”

Having the option of allowing people into the library on an appointment-basis should meet the needs of those individuals who want to look over the library’s selection in person, rather than by searching on a computer, Faucher said.

“They may not have a means to preview and let us know using our remote checkout,” she explained. “We are limited to the number of people we can have inside so setting up appointments will help keep the number of people allowed in at one time manageable.”

Visits to the library will be limited to a maximum of 30 minutes.

Gathering as a group, meeting room reservations, public computers and photocopying are not able to be used at the present time.

“We are working on restoring these options as soon as possible,” Faucher said. “Masks will be worn by all staff. We encourage our patrons to wear masks while browsing through our bookshelves and we will have hand sanitizer available. All items returned must go in our outside dropbox as we have to quarantine the items for everyone’s safety. We take the safety of our patrons and staff seriously and our first step in reopening will help us move in the right direction.”
