Fire flattens Amish house and barn, kills some livestock

ISLAND FALLS, Maine — A family in the Amish community was displaced by an early Monday morning fire that leveled their home at 577 Island Falls Road.

Both the home of Dan and Susanne Miller and an adjacent barn were destroyed by the blaze, which began around 7 a.m. Monday. Several chickens and a few goats perished in the fire, but the Millers’ horses and cows were saved, according to Allicca Torres Quirion, a friend of the family.

The Amish community has helped the Millers relocate to a nearby workshop until a more permanent home can be constructed.

“Everyone stopped everything and started working to get them set up,” Torres Quirion said. “It’s just incredible. Right now is harvest season for them, so they had just finished storing their wood for the winter in their barn and had all of their fruits and vegetables canned. They lost all of their food supply. That is pretty devastating.”

Torres Quirion said monetary donations are being accepted at the Miller family’s farmstand located at 382 Golden Ridge Road in Sherman.

Attempts to reach the Island Falls Fire Department for information on the blaze were not successful.
