Cross country hosts Thomas in annual UMPI Invitational

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine – The University of Maine at Presque Isle hosted North Atlantic Conference opponent Thomas College in our annual Owls Invitational on Oct. 3. The women’s team started the day with a 12:30 p.m. start to their 5K race, followed by the men’s 8K at 1:15 p.m. — all at Park Family Field.

Women’s recap — With Thomas not being able to have race participants in the women’s race, four UMPI runners took to the course. Elizabeth Bitar (Libby) (first year, Percy) led the Owls in her first college race, finishing with a time of 24 minutes, 50 seconds and showing a very promising start to her college career. Jayde Whitten (sophomore, St. Albans) finished second with a 25:20 time. Senior Kendra Silvers (North Berwick) finished with a 26:33 time. Annaset Jackson (sophomore, Wilton) finished with a time of 28:54.

Men’s recap — Jarrod Hooper out of Thomas College finished in first in the men’s 8K race with a time of 28:35. UMPI’s Zackary McAllister (sophomore, Athens) finished in third place with a time of 31:01, just edging past two Terrier runners who finished within 30 seconds behind McAllister. Joel Soper (sophomore, Livermore) finished ninth with a time of 40:19. First-year Campton Tinkman (freshman, Manchester) did not finish due to injury.

 The men’s and women’s cross country teams plan to head to Thomas College to compete on Sunday, Oct. 18. Time is TBD.
