BigRock plans to reopen Dec. 19, 2020

MARS HILL, Maine — BigRock Mountain has announced it will reopen for the 2020-21 ski season, which is expected to run from Dec. 19 to April 4, weather permitting.

According to BigRock officials, discussions are underway with local school systems and recreation departments to provide access to the mountain for ski programs this winter. This is all with the goal of providing a safe place for County youth and families to get out and enjoy the winter season.

“We have been hard at work preparing the ski area for a safe opening. It is part of our continued goal to provide families this healthy outdoor activity,” said Aaron Damon, assistant general manager at the ski facility.

The mountain is closely following the direction of the Maine CDC to open safety, Damon said.

Maine’s COVID-19 prevention checklist lists skiing as a lower risk activity that can be done with no physical contact with others and with safe physical distancing.

The primary concern will be safely controlling the number of patrons in and out of the lodge. The United Way of Aroostook provided the mountain with funding for sanitation dispensers at key points around the facilities.

“This is a great partnership for us. We are happy to use our COVID-19 response funds to help BigRock have a safe and great season,” said Sarah Ennis, United Way executive director.

Damon said in addition to sanitation and Plexiglas barriers, skiers and employees will be required to wear masks and practice social distancing within facilities and at the base of the mountain.

Tickets and season passes are available at the mountain address or on BigRockMaine.com. A ski equipment sale is also scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15, which is the last day to purchase early bird season passes. This season BigRock Mountain will be offering all season pass holders pro-rated discounts in the event of early closure.

“As a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization managed by a local board of directors, BigRock would not be open if not for the support and generosity of the public and local businesses,” Damon said. “We’re committed to making skiing an outdoor activity for the whole family to enjoy.”
