 100 Years Ago – Sept. 8, 1921

College opens for the year Ricker Classical Institute and Junior College opened for its 83rd year of service Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Banking convention — Mrs. Ludwig, Miss Davis, and Mr. & Mrs. Ludwig Jr. are in Rangeley today attending the State Savings Bank Convention.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 5, 1946

From chickens to shoes — Poultry raising, along with the paper industry and the manufacturing of shoes, was cited as the most dynamic parts of Maine’s economy, said Willie Trafton Jr. of Houlton.

Whopper of a fish — A 20-pound salmon was taken out of Hartland Pool Sunday morning by Bill Brown of Houlton. It is believed to be the biggest fish caught there this season. It measured 36 inches with a girth of 19 inches.

50 Years Ago – Sept. 8, 1971

Calling singers — The Houlton Community Chorus is set to begin rehearsal next Monday for its annual December program. The chorus will be under the directorship of Larry Hutchinson and accompanied on piano by Mrs. Patricia Flemington.

New church after 15  years The first service in the new First Congregational Church of Houlton on High Street is to be held this Sunday. The fellowship has been without a church since it was destroyed by fire on Jan. 1, 1956.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 5, 1996

New school opens door The newest school in the community, The Greater Houlton Christain Academy, opened its doors for 81 students Thursday morning. Mark Jago, headmaster of the non-denominational school, said 15 kindergarteners represent the largest of the K-12 classes in the academy’s inaugural year.

Centennial Committee begins work The Community of Oakfield has begun work planning festivities for the town’s 100th birthday party next year. Candy Roy, who was selected to chair the Centennial Committee, said a host of community events are on tap over the course of the next year to raise funds for the celebration.
