100 Years Ago – Sept. 22, 1921

Seventy-fourth year at Ricker The Ricker Classical Institute began last week its 74th year as one of the most successful schools in the state of Maine.

Exhibition at Woodstock a success — The Annual Woodstock Provincial Exhibition held at the town just across from the border from us last week was one of the best that the town has had in its history. The park was crowded for the entire week with an excellent midway and horse races.

75 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1946

Record shop — Broadway Record Shop was featuring “Potato Pickers” guitars for $21 and up. Harmonicas were priced at $1.75 and $2.25. There is something for everyone.

Seamstress earns a prize — Judy Rich, a Houlton High School senior, won the Singer Sewing Contest held recently in The County. The dress she made earned her the prize of a scissor set. The dress will be sent to Boston, where it will be judged in a regional contest. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Rich.

50 Years Ago – Sept. 22, 1971

New adult ed classes — New classes offered by Adult Ed this year will include slimnastics, square dance lessons, ceramics and a tax assessor course.

Rest area Bids were opened for work on a rest area to serve I-95 on Houlton’s Route 1. A traveler information building is to be built on the site. Lighting for the area was specially designed to conserve energy without reducing lighting efficiency.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 18, 1996

Airport studies need for new runway lights To install $400,000 worth of stronger lighting or not to install — that is the question to be investigated by members of the Houlton International Airport Marketing Committee. Chairman Robert Hall said members would review the weather data dating back 10 years to see if they are needed.

Raffle Winners Named The Linneus Sno-Sports held a charity raffle and the winners were Darlene Theriault, who won 100 gallons of fuel oil donated by Dead River Company of Houlton, and Heather McGuire, who won a log cabin quilt donated by Phyllis Tidd.
