3 advance to Elks Hoop Shoot state competition

BANGOR, Maine — Azelea Pierce of Portage Lake and Hudson Porter and Kason Bua, both of Mapleton, all captured Northern District titles in the Elks Hoop Shoot foul shooting competition on Jan. 16 at the James F. Doughty School.

Pierce won the girls’ 8-9 year-old division, while Porter took the victory for 10-11 boys and Bua placed first in the 12-13 age group. Bua prevailed in a tie-breaker against two other competitors.

The state championship will be held Jan. 30, also at the Doughty School in Bangor. Winners at the state event will move on to the New England championships, to be held in Portland March 12.

Three other local shooters competed at the district level. Brody Woodworth of Mars Hill was third in the 8-9 boys’ division, while Abigail Hopkins of Easton was second in the 10-11 girls’ age group and Carley Pickard of Caribou third in the 12-13 girls’ category.
