PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle girls have three games remaining in the regular season and hope to improve on their 9-6 record and seventh-place standing in Class B North.

The Wildcats have dropped their last three contests. In addition to Thursday’s home loss to Mount Desert Island, PI lost at Hermon on Jan. 24 and at Ellsworth on Friday.

Presque Isle was locked up in a tie game with the No. 2-ranked Hawks early in the third period, but ended up being outscored by a 43-18 margin in the second half to go on to a lopsided 60-33 loss. Faith Sjoberg scored 12 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Sadie LaPointe netted seven points for the Wildcats.

In its latest contest, coach Jeff Hudson’s squad trailed 26-11 a minute into the second half before mounting a comeback that fell short against the host Eagles, the fourth-ranked team in the division who prevailed 38-32. PI was within four points on several occasions, but would get no closer. The Wildcats shot poorly from the field, going 10 for 56, and were also just 9 for 23 from the foul line.

Sjoberg paced PI with 12 points and LaPointe delivered a strong outing with seven points, six rebounds and five steals.

Presque Isle goes back to work Wednesday with a 7 p.m. home game against Houlton. On Saturday, the Wildcats take on Foxcroft Academy at 3 p.m., also at PIHS, before closing out its slate on Feb. 8 at Caribou.
