HOULTON, Maine – Houlton High School Principal Tim Tweedie has announced that Breanne Barton has been named the recipient of the HHS Class of 2022 Principal’s Award.
The criteria for this award are academic excellence, outstanding school citizenship, and leadership. Barton, the daughter of Brian and Courtney Barton of Houlton, was selected for the award based on that criteria.
“Bre is an exemplary young person who is very deserving of this recognition,” Tweedie said. “She is incredibly focused, determined and kind. Bre sets lofty goals, then works tirelessly to achieve them. She is an outstanding student, athlete, and overall school leader. I am very proud of her and all of her accomplishments.”
Barton was recently named valedictorian for the Houlton High School Class of 2022. She is also the president of the Houlton High School Chapter of the National Honor Society, has successfully taken four AP courses and several honors classes, is the president of her senior class, has earned the Seal of Biliteracy award for achievement in Spanish, and has been the recipient of several other academic distinctions.
In addition to her academic successes, Barton is also an outstanding athlete. She was the 2019 Penobscot Valley Conference Class C Female Soccer Player of the Year and has earned multiple conference and county awards, including the Butch Shaw Award which is given to the top female soccer player in Aroostook County. She is also an outstanding softball player, a member of the varsity girls basketball team, and a musician who plays saxophone in the school band.
In her spare time, Barton enjoys Crossfit, works at the Houlton Recreation Department, volunteers at Houlton Regional Hospital, and gives much of her time to work with various local youth organizations, including AYBL and Little League.
Barton and other award winners will be presented an individual plaque and will have the opportunity to be awarded one of ten $1,000 scholarships at a Virtual Scholarship Drawing Event on Friday, April 1, at 11 a.m.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
