Town of Houlton looking to fill multiple seats on municipal boards

HOULTON, Maine — Interest in serving on town committees appears to be at an all-time low.

Houlton Town Clerk Cathy O’Leary said Thursday that the town has multiple vacancies on a number of important boards.

The town has two vacancies on its Zoning Board of Appeals; one position on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board; three positions on the Personnel Board of Appeals; and three positions on the Board of Assessment Review.

“These boards meet on an as-needed basis, but it is always important to have them in place when an item comes up,” O’Leary said. “The Parks & Recreation Board does meet once a month except through the summer.”

The Zoning Board tackles issues involving the town’s many different zones, such as residential and commercial uses. The Parks and Recreation Advisory board is responsible for overseeing the number of programs offered by the Recreation Department.

The Board of Assessment Review is a group that adjudicates disputes between the town and a property taxpayer regarding tax valuations on their properties.

The Personnel Board oversees any appeals made by municipal employees.

Those interested in serving on any of the aforementioned boards are encouraged to fill out an application at the town office. Copies of the application may also be found on the town’s website. For information, call the town office at 207-532-7111.
