115 Years Ago – May 16, 1907
A trip to Boston — C.S. Patterson is on a week’s trip to Boston. His place as clerk at the Vaughan House is filled during his absence by George Calkins.
Large improvements made to store — Shaw & Mitton, the enterprising grocers, began this Thursday morning making some large improvements and changes in their store. They will put a basement under the whole building, take out the partition in the store giving one large room, make an addition to the shed adding another story to it and extending it even with the rest of the building. The work will be in charge of E.O. Dahlstrom, well-known contractor and builder. When completed, this store will be without question the finest grocery store in the county.
100 Years Ago – May 18, 1922
New owner — John Bloomstrand of New Sweden was transacting business in Caribou Tuesday. Mr. Bloomstrand has purchased the store of the late N.E. Olson and will hereafter carry on the business in his own name.
Opened a new business — Joe Manship, who has been employed in J.M. Chaleau’s barber shop for a number of years, began business for himself Monday, opening a shop in the concrete block over Currier Bros.’ Clothing Store.
75 Years Ago – May 15, 1947
Observed anniversary — Mr. and Mrs. Charles E. Smith observed their 50th wedding anniversary at their farm home on the Perham Road. An open house was held during the morning and afternoon for over a hundred guests. Their marriage was blessed with five children. They have 12 grandchildren and they were all present at the party.
Golden wedding anniversary observed — A lovely occasion, long to remember, was the 50th anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Page, who celebrated when their sons and their wives had an open house. Three children were born out of this union, and also have two grandchildren. Approximately 125 friends called to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Page.
25 Years Ago – May 14, 1997
Change of address — Kirby of Aroostook County recently moved from their office in Presque Isle to one in Sweden Street Mall in Caribou. The business, which both sells and services Kirby vacuums throughout the area, was welcomed by the chamber as they had their official ribbon cutting. There for the ceremony were City Manager Richard Matilla; Executive Director of the Chamber, Kirk Tibbetts; Paul McLauchlan, John Lancaster and Patty Corriveau of the chamber; Greg Richars, owner of Kirby of Aroostook; and Mayor of Caribou Dick Corriveau.
Top in sales — Rick Cyr was presented with a trophy in honor of his selection as the year’s Most Outstanding Sales Manager in New England for Anheuser-Busch Inc. Cyr is sales manager at Solman Distributors, Caribou.
