75 Years Ago – Aug. 14, 1947
Eighty attended Aroostook and Florida picnic — More than 80 attended the Aroostook-Florida picnic at the Aroostook Valley Park. Mrs. Charles Jameson was chairman of the program, which included group singing led by George P. Findlen of Fort Fairfield, piano-accordion selections by Janet Higgins of Mapleton, an address by Clifford McIntire of Perham, and humorous readings by Mrs. Charles Everett, Mars Hill.
More than 33,500 at playground — With the Northern Maine Fair over and the weather very much on the warm side, activities at the community playground and swimming pool were in full swing. The attendance for the previous week was 5,170, of which 275 was the attendance at the softball games. Total attendance for all activities as of the week ending Aug. 10 was 33,540. Continued improvements included the erection and full use of a set of four teeters.
50 Years Ago – Aug. 16, 1972
Politics and horses do mix — When Governor’s Day arrived Thursday, Aug. 10, there were plenty of local politicians on hand to give Gov. Kenneth M. Curtis an Aroostook style tour through the Northern Maine Fair. At one point it was hard to tell the political enthusiasts from other harness racing fans. Gov. Curtis presented the Governor’s Pace trophy to the spirited winner, Regal Sparkler, trailed by Cold Spring Cy, second, and Burdock Song, third. Gov. Curtis gave a favorite campaigner his autograph.
M. Lamoreau took a degree in Colorado — Chancellor Maurice B. Mitchell of the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, announced that Marilyn Lamoreau was one of 262 students to receive a master of arts and master of science degree. Commencement exercises were held Friday, Aug. 11, at the University Hall quadrangle. A total of 536 candidates received their degrees.
Easton locals — The Easton Homemakers Group won first prize Saturday, July 22, at the 25th annual Maine Potato Blossom Festival for its float entry, “The Supper Spud.” The group’s float took top honors over numerous others in the Fort Fairfield parade, which showed competitors from all across Aroostook.
25 Years Ago – Aug. 13, 1997
Running camp participants — The County cross Country Running Camp, held July 28 to Aug. 1 at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, was another huge success with the numbers increasing once again from the previous year. The directors were Chris Smith, UM-Presque Isle men’s cross country coach, and Danny Paul, coach of the Presque Isle varsity cross country team.
Smythe’s won UMPI league — The title in the UMPI Summer Basketball League was decided, with the No. 2 ranked Smythe’s IGA defeating top-seed Townsend in the finals, 67-63. Scott Young buried seven three-point field goals en route to a 27-point performance for Smythe’s. Chris Casavant added 19 for the winners. Hugh Kirkpartrick led Townsend with 15 points. Brian Coman had 14 and Brett Doody 12. Seventy five players, representing six teams competed in the 1997 league, which was in its seventh year. Coordinating the league was Karl Henrikson, head coach of the UM-Presque Isle men’s basketball team.
