Lions support Balloon Fest

The Mapleton Lions Club will continue as a major sponsor of the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest that opens tomorrow evening, Aug. 25. The club has been sponsoring the festival for nearly 10 years and has helped stabilize and expand the balloon fest and it is happy to continue to sponsor this large community event.

Two weeks ago the Lions sold cheeseburgers, hot dogs and fresh hand-cut french fries at the Northern Maine Fair.  Many people are now in fair food withdrawal, wishing they could get a sausage sandwich , fresh fries or just a doughboy.  The club will reopen the food booth at the fairgrounds for the balloon festival.  This year the food booth will expand its operation to all three days of the balloon fest, starting Thursday evening.

Mapleton Lions Club members cook during the recent Northern Maine Fair. The Lions’ fairgrounds food booth will be in full operation during the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest. Club chefs will cook fair-type food starting at 4 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, and Friday, Aug. 26, and Saturday the 27th from noon to 8 p.m. All funds raised through the food booth will fund Lions Club charities.

The club will serve food starting at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday evenings and from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Frequently folks ask what charities their food purchases support.  Lions fundraise for their many charities, including the purchasing of eyeglasses for children and individuals from low-income families, upgrading the Mapleton Recreation facilities, providing college scholarships and providing the Mapleton Lions Hall for the town recreation program.

They also sponsoring the Mapleton Little League and will raise funds for special projects, including financial support for the Quoggy Jo Ski Center.

The club thanks all who bought food from the club in the past and all those who will come out during the festival.

So plan to come enjoy the balloons as well as support your friends and neighbors through the Mapleton Lions Club charities program.

At the Haystack Historical Museum on Saturday, Aug. 13, there was considerable hootin’ and hollerin’ as bingo players won many prizes in several rousing Bingo games. Here, happy players enjoy the afternoon. Thanks to the Mapleton Daze Committee, the Haystack Historical Society hosted the free games and sold food as a fundraiser.

Bingo fundraiser

The Haystack Historical Society in Mapleton hosted its first Bingo fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Haystack Historical Museum on Main Street.

Folks who came laughed and enjoyed a good time with neighbors and friends.  Thanks to Mapleton Daze committee members, the Bingo afternoon went off without a hitch.  The committee members solicited many prizes that were given away, as well as did the Bingo calling and food preparation and sales.

The Bingo session was free with the Society accepting donations and selling hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, chips and drinks as their as their primary fundraiser.

The historical society thanked the Mapleton Daze committee members who ran the game in the same style as they do for the Bingo Evening during Mapleton Daze.  This first time fundraiser was a real success as players complimented the workers on how well the afternoon went and how much fun they had.

Now if you missed coming to this Bingo fundraiser, there is good news for you.  Two or three more Bingo afternoons are planned in the coming the year.  The next one will be shortly after the holidays with another in the spring.  Everyone is invited to attend and encouraged to tell your family and friends to come and have some fun at these future Bingo sessions.

You have the chance to play at no charge and possibly win some prizes as well as have fun while helping support the Haystack Historical Museum.
