75 Years Ago – Sept. 25, 1947

The Rotary inducted new members — The meeting of the Presque Isle Rotary Club was devoted to induction of two new members and reports of special committees. Past President Loren F. Carter welcomed Oscar H. Tagget and Byron S. Kempton as new members of the club.

Harold E. Bryant reported for the committee to review the set-up of committees, Carl A. Weick for the committee to review the by-laws, and Clifford O.T. Wieden for the committee on use of the Rotarian magazine.

Mrs. George Huson named president of Garden Club — Mrs. George Huson of Easton was elected president of the Garden Club of the Pierian Club at its annual meeting at the Community Recreation Center. Mrs. Huson succeeded Mrs. J. Roger Erskine. Other officers elected for the following year were Mrs. Karl Koch, vice president; Mrs. John McCargar, secretary-treasurer; and  Mrs. Eugene K. Rowe, press correspondent. 

50 Years Ago – Sept. 27, 1972

Employee earned certificate — Michael White, project engineer with the Soil Conservation Service in Presque Isle, was awarded a quality in-grade salary increase for his high quality performance which was appraised as being above the job requirements in fiscal year 1972. White was government representative for nearly $1 million worth of contract work in the Central Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a resident of Castle Hill and had been assigned to the Aroostook County area for the previous four years. He had an engineering degree from the University of Maine at Orono, and prior to his working for the Soil Conservation Service, he was employed by the U.S. Forest Service.

Local soccer club scored second win — The soccer team at the University of Maine at Presque Isle chalked up their second victory of the season Sept. 23, as they turned back Thomas College 3 to 2 at Waterville in a Northeast College Conference contest. The UMPI Owls took an early lead, scoring two goals in the first half. Smith tallied first with an assist from Dana Hews and shortly afterwards marked up another tally unassisted. The locals closed their scoring in the second half when Mike Brown put one into the net with an assist from Smith. Steve Maclean tallied both goals for the losers. The same afternoon, UM, Fort Kent, scored their first Northeast College Conference victory by downing Unity College 3 to 1.

25 Years Ago – Sept. 24, 1997

New president at Katahdin Trust — The board of directors of Katahdin Trust Company announced the appointment of Jon J. Prescott to serve as president and chief executive officer. In making the announcement, chairman of the board Steve Richardson said, “The entire board of directors was extremely pleased to have Jon assume the responsibilities of president and CEO. Jon had been actively involved in the strategic planning and direction of the bank for several years. His appointment ensured that Katahdin Trust Company adhered to the philosophy that had made us successful over the years while continuing to experience growth and  prosperity.” Richardson, who had served as president and CEO of Katahdin Trust Company, made the decision to step down so that he may devote more time to his family and two businesses, Richardson’s  Hardware in Patten and Fogg’s Home Center in Houlton.

Rathbun Lumber added kitchen consultant to staff — Rathbun Lumber Company announced that Susan Czosnek joined their staff as a kitchen design consultant. In this position, her job was to work directly with those customers interested in designing kitchen and bathrooms for new construction or remodeling projects. Czosnek completed Level II Training for the 20/20 computer design program, which enabled her to design exact layouts and photo-realistic images for each customer. Czosnek and her husband owned Dave’s Electric in Presque Isle, and resided in their newly remodeled house on State Street, with their three children Kelly, Ryan and Chris. Rathbun Lumber featured a full line of kitchen and bath products in their showrooms at 43 State St. in Presque Isle.
