Houlton Parks and Recreation Department announces upcoming programs

HOULTON, Maine – The Houlton Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for winter and is excited to start rolling out programs and events. Below is a list of programs and events that are being offered.

Little Hoopsters – This is an introductory basketball program where kids will work on fun dribbling and passing skills, while upholding the fun nature of the sport. Little Hoopsters is for Kindergarteners and will take place on Saturdays, Dec. 3, 10, and 17 at the Rec Center. There are two time slots available: 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. For each time slot, there is a limit of 15 children. The cost of the program is $30 for Houlton Residents and $45 for Non-Houlton Residents. Marina Cameron and Rec Staff will be the instructors of Little Hoopsters.

Tykes and Peewee Basketball – Teaching the fundamentals and skills of basketball while promoting fun, Tykes basketball is for Grades 1 and 2, while Peewee basketball is for grades 3 and 4. Practices will begin the first week of December and games will start in January at the Rec Center. Once teams are created, coaches will call on times for practices. The cost of the program is $50 for Houlton Residents and $75 for Non-Houlton Residents. There is a limit of 40 children per program.

Youth Pickleball – Pickleball, a new program for the Rec, is becoming a wildly popular sport. It is easy to learn, fun to play, and can be enjoyed by everyone. During this program, participants will learn the basics, practice skills, and test themselves with games. The program is available for grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. Both groups will be held at the Rec Center on Mondays, Nov. 14, 21, and 28. Grades 3-5 will take place from 3:15-4 p.m., while Grades 6-8 will take place from 4-4:45 p.m. The cost of the program is $20 for Houlton Residents and $30 for Non-Houlton Residents.

Shiretown Spooktacular – Partnering with the Greater Houlton Chamber of Commerce and Serendipitous Dragonfly, we are thrilled to be hosting the third annual Shiretown Spooktacular. Maine Street and Market Square will be flooded with local businesses handing out candy and goodies to trick-or-treaters. Come dressed and bring your bags. 

The event will take place from noon-2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct 29. Youth 12 and under are invited to attend with their families. All youth must be accompanied by an adult. Family photos will be taken at the picturesque chamber of commerce and a costume contest will happen at 1 p.m. in front of the Cary Library. Prizes will be given to the best costume in the following groups: ages 4 and under, 5-8, 9-12, and best family costume. This event is free.
