Houlton Elks honor veterans with supper

HOULTON, Maine — Members of the Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835 welcomed veterans, active service members and their families for a special supper Friday, Nov. 11,  to commemorate Veterans Day.

More than 200 veterans, active service members and their families gathered at the Elks Lodge to enjoy a buffet menu of ham, chicken cordon bleu, mashed potatoes with gravy, peas, rolls and dessert.

The lodge was able to host this event in person after a couple of years of takeout only.

“It was amazing to see so many veterans and their families attend this event and to be able to personally shake their hand and thank them for their service and dedication,” said Elizabeth Grant, exalted ruler for the Houlton Elks.

The Houlton Lodge of Elks has hosted a Veterans Day supper for many years and will continue with this tradition for many years to come.

“So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them,” Grant said.

In an effort to recognize and support this nation’s veterans, Elks National President Bruce Hidley proclaimed November to be Veterans Remembrance Month.

“This month, we urge all Americans to join the Elks in service to the veterans in your community.

For Elks, service to veterans is a year-round commitment,” Grant added.

Last year, the Elks’ nationwide support of veterans, including time, in-kind and fiscal donations, totaled more than $39 million.

The Houlton lodge will also host a senior citizen Christmas dinner Dec. 18.
