75 Years Ago, April 8, 1948

Elks Lodge Holds Installation Here – Past District Deputy Grand Exalted Ruler Dr. P. L. B. Ebbett officiated at the annual installation of new officers of the HOulton Lodge of Elks held Tuesday night at the lodge rooms.

The installation was preceded by a stag supper. Included among those inducted into office were the following: exalted ruler, S. Earl Pierson; esteemed leading knight, Harry H. Baulch;  esteemed loyal knight, Fred Sylvester; esteemed lecturing knight, Lafayette Ervin; secretary, Keith Lilley; treasurer, Dr. John O. Willey; tyler, Merlin Hammond; organist, Clayton Currie; trustees, George A. Russell, Albert G. Merritt and Peter J. Dombek. Exalted Ruler Pierson was appointed delegate to the grand lodge convention and retiring Exalted Ruler Thomas C. Vose was named alternate.

Banquet Closes Bowling Season – The Recreation Bowling season officially closed Tuesday evening with the annual bowling banquet held at Watson Hall. Approximately 50 bowlers attended the informal get- together. The awards and trophies were presented by Harld Bubar, Director of Recreation. The V.F.W. won the championship trophy for the 1947-1948 season. This trophy was won by the Elks last year and has to be won three times to be held permanently. The regular bowlers on the V.F.W. team are Gene Sawyer, Bud Clark, Bill Tidd, Paul McNally, Mark White, Jim Henry, and team captain, Max Adler. Silver bowling balls were presented to the members of the V.F.W. team. Individual awards were also presented to the Elks who were the runners-up in the championship tournament.

50 Years Ago, April 11, 1973

Restaurant, Two Homes Are Damaged By Fire – A downtown restaurant and two private homes were damaged by a series of fires that kept the Fire Department busy this past week. Most serious damage occurred early Saturday morning when Cleale’s Family Restaurant, in the heart of Market Square, was completely gutted by fire. A fire in the nighttime Wednesday caused heavy damage to the home of Mrs. Edith Gray on Highland Avenue, and a fire Saturday evening damaged the basement family room at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dunn on Park Avenue. 

Hilltop No. 2 Captures Harvey Trophy – Hilltop Lanes No. 2 team, taking seven of a possible eight points in their two final matches Sunday afternoon, captured the annual Harvey Trophy with a 16-4 record over the three-week competition. The team entered the final round in second place, trailing the Hilltop Lanes No. 1 team in the women’s bowling tournament, Sunday, however, they took all four points in a match with Hilltop No. 1, and scored a 1-1 decision over IBC.Hilltop NO. 1. In their second match, could do no better than gain a 2-2 tie with the Dux, and finished in second place.

Town hires firm to redesign Millar Arena – An engineering firm has been hired to redesign and construct the John A. Millar Arena in Houlton. CES, Inc. of Brewer has been chosen by town officials to rebuild the former arena that collapsed Jan. 30 due to the heavy weight of snow and ice on the roof. At the April 13 Houlton Town meeting, councilors authorized Town Manager Allan Bean to waive the bid procedure and enter into an estimated $75,000 contract with CES, Inc. Bean said he reviewed three proposals from various companies, but found the Brewer frim to be in the best interest of the town.
