Extension to host talks at Northern Maine Fair

The University of Maine Cooperative Extension will host the third annual Extension Talks sessions at the Northern Maine Fair. Each session will feature Extension staff and faculty sharing skills and information about a variety of topics. 

On Thursday, Aug. 3, at 6 p.m., David Lowe, sustainable agriculture and horticulture professional, will discuss using cover crops to reduce plant disease, improve soil health and improve water management from a homeowners perspective. Audience members are encouraged to ask questions.

On Friday, Aug. 4, at 6 p.m., Lisa Fishman, nutrition education and Extension homemaker professional, will talk about canning as a way to preserve the harvest. She will cover water bath and pressure canning basics.

On Saturday, Aug. 5, at 2:30 p.m., Kutay Ozturk, assistant Extension professor and potato plant pathologist, will share his knowledge about the identification and management of common potato pests and diseases that homeowners may encounter. His talk will be followed by a question and answer session.

On Sunday, Aug. 6, at 2 p.m., Fishman will discuss freezing and dehydrating as ways to preserve food for long-term storage.
