PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Police Department and local school officials are mourning former police officer and high school coach Timothy McCue, 65, whose death was announced last week.

McCue’s funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. in Presque Isle on Saturday, Dec. 16 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on 331 Main Street, with a celebration of life being held at the Knights of Columbus Hall immediately after the 11 a.m. burial services.

Presque Isle Police Chief Laurie Kelly and SAD 1 superintendent Ben Greenlaw pointed out McCue’s contributions to students through his participation in Drug Abuse Resistance Education 30 years ago.

Before coming to Presque Isle Police Department in January 1980, McCue worked at the Houlton Police Department for a year, Kelly said. Kelly began working with McCue in 1986, and six years later McCue got more involved with the DARE program. McCue was originally from Wellington, ME.

“He has had a positive impact on thousands of students’ lives through his connections as a safety coordinator, as a coach, and as a police officer in our community,” Greenlaw said.

McCue began working with the DARE program for SAD 1 schools in 1992. He began with fifth graders before moving up to junior high and high school DARE in 1997, Greenlaw said. McCue had a passion for education and gravitated toward being an educator who worked with the public.

The last 11 years working for the Presque Isle Police Department, McCue solely worked in schools with the DARE training program, according to Greenlaw.

McCue retired from the city’s Police Department in 2004 but shortly after went on to become the SAD 1 school district safety officer to continue his passion for education. He had recently retired from SAD 1 in June 2023, Greenlaw said.

Greenlaw worked closely with McCue on school safety and remembers McCue as a hard worker who loved the students and staff at SAD 1.

McCue also coached middle school baseball, middle school basketball, high school baseball, high school softball, junior varsity basketball, and varsity soccer, Greenlaw said.

A moment of silence was held for McCue Saturday, Dec. 9 before the Presque Isle girls and boys varsity basketball games against Old Town.

“[McCue] was involved in so much on an extracurricular side he really got to know our students and was such a visible member of our community,” Greenlaw said.
