75 Years Ago – January 13, 1949

Shrine Club Elects – Newell B. Titcomb, of Houlton, was elected president, Newman Doyle of Caribou, vice-president, and Rodney Palmer, of Houlton, secretary and treasurer, at the annual meeting and banquet of the Aroostook County Shrine Club Friday night at the Northland Hotel. Mr. Titcomb succeeded Neil Shaw, of Fort Fairfield, in the presidency. The Shrine Club voted to reinstate activities of the Sunshine Club, inoperative for several years. This organization raises money for the benefit of crippled children who are provided treatment at the Shrine Hospital, Springfield, Mass. 

Ricker Adds Win From U. OF. N.B. – Ricker Junior College varsity hoopsters opened their 1949 basketball action Saturday night when they traveled to Fredericton and took the measure of the University of New Brunswick five at the Lord Beaverbrook gym. The local collegiates’ shooting was off in the first half and they trailed 25-21 at the half-time intermission. Ricker put on a drive in the early minutes of the second half and with Treadwell, Rivers and Trafton finding the range, the Junior college built up a nine point lead. 

50 Years Ago – January 9, 1974

Duty In England – Sgt. Thomas H. Church, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas W. Church of Blaine has arrived for duty at Woodbridge RAF station in England. A fuel specialist, he is assigned to a unit of the US Air Force in Europe. He previously served at Loring Air Force Base. He was a graduate in 1971 of Central Aroostook High School. He is married to the former Wanda Rideout, daughter of Mr. and MRs. Hubert Rideout of Mars Hill. They have one daughter, Travis. 

Nesbitt Serving In Germany With Infantry – Army Sergeant First Class William O. Nesbitt, son of Donald O. Nesbitt, of HOdgdon, is serving with the 3d Infantry Division at Giebelstadt Air Base, Germany. Sgt. Nesbitt is a platoon sergeant in Battery B, 3d Battalion of the Division’s 67th Air Defense Artillery. 

25 Years Ago – January 27, 1999

Houlton Cheerleaders Win Eastern Maine Title – The Houlton High School cheerleaders performed a near perfect routine in front of a large contingent of Houlton fans to garner their second Class B Eastern Maine Cheerleading title in three years. With the competition close after the first round, the Houlton squad trailed Old Town by two points- 81.5 to 83.5.They increased their initial score of 81.5 to an 85, which was the second highest score of the competition.

Hospital honors Williams – On Sunday, Jan. 17, Houlton Regional Hospital held ceremonies to dedicate the “Edward P. Williams Emergency Department” in honor of Dr. Edward Williams. After graduating from Ricker Classical institute in 1947, Bowdoin College in 1951 and Cornell Medical College in 1955, Williams did his internship, took additional special training in Obstetrics, then served two years in the Air Force. In 1958, Williams returned to Houlton to open his primary care practice that included obstetrics and surgery.
