99 Years Ago – Jan. 22, 1925

Rotarians pay tribute to Miss Knight — A glowing tribute was paid to Miss Edith Knight, county anti-tuberculosis nurse, by Dr. F. W. Mann, President of the Maine Medical Society, who addressed the Houlton Rotary Club at their Wednesday meeting. Dr. Mann attributed much of the success of the work which had been done in Aroostook County in its campaign to combat tuberculosis to Miss Knight, who had served faithfully and well. Great credit was also given to the association President, Hon. E. L. Cleveland, and Secretary Hon. Chandler C. Harvey. Dr. Mann briefly described the proposed Health Unit for Aroosotok and what it would mean locally.

50 Years Ago – Jan. 23, 1974

Local skaters took another — Presque Isle’s hockey team came up with their fourth victory in five starts Tuesday, Jan. 15, as they downed Fort Kent 5 to 2 in a game played at Fort Kent. Topping the goal scorers for the winners were Dan Donahue with two goals, one of which was unassisted. On his second goal, he had assists from Barnes and Donovan. Smith, Barnes and Greene were the other scorers for Presque Isle. Fort Kent scorers were Donald Leclair, with assists from Boucher and Nadeau.

Club elected new officers — The Pine State Motorcycle Club held an election of officers for the year. Dave Berube of Caribou was elected president; Alan Schark of Presque Isle, vice president; Lurene Schark, secretary; Joan Berube of Caribou, treasurer; Storer Richards of Presque Isle, road captain; and Audrey Richards, public relations.

Snowmobilers elected officers at Easton — The Easton Trailbreakers Snowmobile Club held their second meeting Monday Jan. 7, at the office of P. & M Garage at Easton Center. An election of officers was held. Those elected were Mike Adams, president; Gerald Flewelling, vice president; Janna Dodge, secretary; and Bonnie Clark, treasurer. A board of directors was elected to consist of the four officers plus Pete White, Ed Lint, Mel Cleaves and Dwight Fleweling. A By-law committee was elected to consist of Loomis Scott Jr., chairman; Terry Clark, Maurice Hewitt Jr. and Jim Culberson. Those elected to be on the membership committee were Pete White, Ed Lint, Maurice Hewitt Jr., Ira Dodge and Dwight Flewelling.

25 Years Ago – Jan. 27, 1999

Club honored businessman — On Jan. 5, Todd Hedrich of Hedrich Vending, Inc., was a guest at the regular meeting of the Presque Isle Kiwanis Club. Club members presented him with a plaque and thanked him for his continued support of the Kiwanis Community Christmas Project. For many years, Todd had provided a Hedrich Vending truck and sometimes two trucks for use in delivering food to deserving families at Christmas time. Hedrich himself had volunteered to help pack and deliver food on the day before Christmas. He also had annually donated turkeys to the project.

Donation  — First Citizens Bank president David I. Dorsey presented a check for $1,000 to Dana Swett, facilitator for the Northern Maine Fair Association’s Forestry Resource Council Building project. The check represented the first of three $1,000 payments on the bank’s $3,000 pledge to the building project.

Let’s hear it for cheering — Area cheerleading teams gathered Tuesday at Caribou High School for the annual Invitational Cheerleading Competition. Houlton took first place in the event, followed by Presque Isle and Caribou, Fort Fairfield and Central Aroostook also advanced to the second round. In the Eastern Maine Championships held Saturday, Fort Fairfield was the Class D winner, with Central Aroostook placing thirds and Washburn fourth. Presque Isle was sixth in Class A.
