FAIRFIELD, Maine – Sawyer St. Peter of Caribou connected on 22 of 25 free throw attempts Sunday, January 28 to earn first place in the boys’ 8-9 year-old division at the Maine Elks Association Hoop Shoot state free throw contest held at Lawrence Junior High School.
Next up for St. Peter is the New England Regional Hoop Shoot Championships to be held March 9 in Portland, where he will compete against other state champions from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont. The winner advances to the Elks Hoop Shoot national championships in Chicago April 18-20.
With his outstanding performance, St. Peter also claimed the Hon. Amos A McCallum Outstanding Boys Shooter Award as the top overall shooter for all the age divisions.
Other representatives of Aroostook County Elks lodges turned in strong performances at the state competition.
Myra Mosher of Presque Isle was the runner-up in the girls’ 8-9 year-old division, while Selena Crouse of Blaine also took second place in the girls’ 10-11 division.
Jackson Holdsworth of Caribou was second in the 10-11 boys’ category, while Eli McBreairty of Mapleton was the runner-up in the boys’ 12-13 classification.
Quinn Corrigan of Caribou placed third in the girls’ 12-13 division.
St. Peter, Mosher, Corrigan, McBreairty and Crouse all represented Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954 and had qualified for the state contest by winning at the local, lodge and district levels. Holdsworth, who represented Houlton Elks Lodge 835, was victorious at the lodge and district competitions.
