A convicted sex offender lives at a Presque Isle home the FBI is investigating, according to state records.
Joseph Maile, 27, lists his residence as 12 Summer St., according to his Maine Sex Offender Registry profile.
The FBI and local law enforcement descended on the home on Jan. 8, filing in and out of the building. They did not have weapons drawn or appear to be confronting an active threat at the time.
The agency was conducting court-authorized activity, FBI spokeswoman Kristen Setera said Wednesday. She was unable to release further information since it is an ongoing investigation.
The FBI declined to comment on Thursday about whether the investigation was related to Maile.
Maile was convicted of unlawful sexual contact on Jan. 10, 2022, according to the sex offender registry. Court records on the case are sealed and unavailable for public viewing, Presque Isle District Court officials said Thursday.
However, according to the Presque Isle Criminal Docket report for cases heard in January 2022, Maile was sentenced to 364 days in prison for unlawful sexual contact. He was given a suspended 364-day sentence for domestic violence assault with two years’ probation, and three counts of gross sexual assault were dismissed.
Maine law requires people convicted of sexual crimes to register on the Maine Sex Offender Registry. If they move, they must update their information within five days and notify local law enforcement within 24 hours.
Maile last registered at 12 Summer St. last February, according to his registry listing.
His background also includes a 2019 sexual assault arrest. The Maine State Police arrested him on two counts of gross sexual assault after he was accused of having sexual contact with a juvenile.
Most recently, he was arrested in September 2023 in Presque Isle on charges of robbery, domestic assault and disorderly conduct arising from a family fight, according to court records. The robbery and assault charges were dismissed, and he was sentenced to 53 days in jail for disorderly conduct, court records state.
