AR Gould Hospital welcomes its 2025 new year baby

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Colton Walker Hayes, the first baby born in 2025 at Northern Light AR Gould Hospital in Presque Isle, was delivered at 12:20 a.m. on Tuesday, January 7.

Colton was 7 pounds, 5 ounces and 19.5 inches long at birth. He is the son of Amanda Carmichael and Jerry Hayes of Blaine.

The couple’s first child together, 5-year old Remington, has already been excited to greet his baby brother via FaceTime. The couple is raising a blended family, so Colton has four other siblings to welcome him home as well: Bella, age 7; Summer, 16; Levi, 17; and Cody, 19. Most live with the couple full-time.

Jerry Hayes and Amanda Carmichael of Blaine are the proud parents of Northern Light AR Gould Hospital’s first baby of 2025, Colton Walker, born on January 7. The family were presented a basket full of items to help care for baby and mom by Beth Lint, RN, manager of the Women and Children’s Unit, and Kelly Robichaud, RN, a nurse on the unit. Although he has lots of experience as a father, Hayes notes that this was the first time he was able to cut the baby’s umbilical cord. “It was pretty amazing,” he said.

Delivering the baby was nurse mid-wife Michelle Medvedoff, CNM, with the assistance of Kim Tompkins, RN and Marissa McKeen, RN, nurses in the hospital’s Women and Children’s Unit.

“The nurses have taken such good care of us,” says Carmichael. “They are so helpful and check in with me regularly. I delivered Remington here too, and it was the same way then.”

The couple were surprised to learn their baby was the first to be born at AR Gould in 2025 since nearly a week had gone by since the start of the year. While it may seem a little late for a New Year baby, Colton was born right on time – on the date he was due.

In celebration of the first birth of 2025, the couple was presented with a basket full of baby supplies and other goodies from the hospital.
