Roy Woods (center left), chairman of the Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery in Caribou, presents a certificate of appreciation to Loring Job Corps masonry instructor Robert Shaw in recognition of his and his students’ support in planning and constructing a monument base and chain rails for the large bronze battlefield cross monument. With additions like this monument, the cemetery honors veterans but also teaches through a visual that freedom is not free.
