Around 200 Aroostook County residents gathered at the office of U.S. Sen. Susan Collins in Caribou on April 19 to show their displeasure and disapproval of the Trump administration’s policies, plans and actions.
The protest, sponsored by Aroostook Organizers for Change, featured several speakers, including Christina Theriault of Maine Family Planning, who said her program’s funds had been cut.
Another participant said he could simply no longer keep silent in the face of current events.
Protesters then marched from Senator Collins’ office through downtown Caribou to the office of Rep. Jared Golden. People carried signs that noted the failure of both representatives to hold town hall meetings to give residents the opportunity to express their concerns face to face.
Organizers were happy with the turnout and said community response, based on people driving by, seemed to be generally positive, with occasional shouts and gestures of disapproval.
“It is really remarkable that in a county that voted overwhelmingly for Trump, hundreds of people are willing to stand up and condemn what he has done since taking office,” organizer Mikaela Henninger said.
