We are looking forward to our open house on Saturday, May 31.
We are also partnering with the Presque Isle Rotary Club for a fun and exciting day. There will be a community 5K walk to benefit not only the Central Aroostook Humane Society but the Rotary Club’s local mental health initiatives. Watch for more details in the coming weeks.
Spring has finally sprung here in Aroostook County, and we’re all happy to see the warmer temperatures and vibrant flowers that are bursting with color. Most of us know the basics on how to keep our furry friends cool, calm and collected during the hotter months, but it never hurts to have a reminder of some springtime concerns.
This goes without saying, but we’re saying it anyway: Don’t let that water bowl dry up. Make sure your pet has access to fresh water 24/7. Also, dry, shaded shelter is necessary for pets who spend time outside.
When you are ready to open those windows for the fresh outdoor air, make sure all your window screens are secured and properly fitted.
If your pets can access your gardens, it might be a good idea to research what plants may be toxic for your furry friends. Also, be sure to keep harmful pesticides and fertilizers locked away from your curious pet.
Although central and southern Maine seem to have more of a flea and tick population, we are not immune up here in The County. With our warmer seasons upon us, make sure your pet is protected.
With spring comes the shedding of furrier pups. You can either take the time to groom your pet at home or use a professional groomer. Your pet will love you for this pampering.
While spring cleaning my garden a few years ago, I accidentally stumbled onto a wasp nest. If your pet gets stung by a wasp or bee, carefully remove the stinger and apply an ice pack. If the sting is around the head, mouth or nose, keep a close eye to make sure there aren’t issues with swallowing or breathing. As always, if you have concerns, contact your veterinarian.
A good reminder is that if your pet is microchipped, be sure that your information is up to date, especially if you’ve had a change of address or phone number. This identification is key in having your pet returned to you.

Please be responsible pet owners: spay and neuter.
