Just a reminder that we are a couple of weeks away from our big open house and 5K walk.
The Presque Isle Rotary Club and the Central Aroostook Humane Society are teaming up to put on a super fun “block party” on Saturday, May 31. There will be local food vendors, a deejay spinning some of your favorite tunes, games, food and an easy 5K walk for those looking to get out and enjoy the fresh spring air.
Bring your pups, kids, baby strollers or just yourself. It will be great fun for a great cause. Proceeds will benefit not only the animals, but Rotary’s local mental health initiatives. Check out our Facebook page for more details.
With all of us, sometimes our hectic and busy schedules cause us constant worry about situations and problems. Our animal companions, however, have no such worries and basically live in the present moment. If we can stop long enough and focus only on the present moment, our brains can relax as we start to become calmer and more rational in our thinking and behavior. We can certainly learn a lot from our furry companions.
Knowing that our pets will be loyal to us and provide unbiased attention regardless of our life situations gives us all a boost of self-esteem that is unlike other feelings of confidence. Our furry family members love unconditionally and don’t judge us, no matter what is going on in our lives.
Owning a pet gives us a sense of purpose and even benefits our mental health. Pets rely on us for their everyday needs, and by providing them with a loving and happy home, it in turn gives us a sense of well-being and even makes us feel special and wanted.
Interacting with animals as much as possible can have a huge impact. The simple act of playing or petting an animal can lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and can even lower blood pressure. Even if you aren’t looking to adopt a pet, shelters always welcome people who want to walk a dog or play with a kitty. Socializing is always important.
Studies have shown that interacting with a friendly animal for as little as five minutes helps our bodies to release serotonin and dopamine, two hormones that relax the nervous system and help to create a sense of calm in the body.
The more we smile and laugh while interacting with an animal, even for five minutes, the more we can improve our serenity. And we can all use a little of that. That’s the power of pets.
