Elks Veterans Day supper draws packed house

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — A capacity crowd attended the Presque Isle Elks’ free Veterans Day supper on Nov. 11 at the Presque Isle Elks Lodge located at 508 Main St.  

Veterans, current military personnel, their spouses and other guests waited  patiently to be served from a diverse menu. Moose meat donated by the Maine Warden  Service was utilized in eight different recipes, including lasagna, both traditional and non traditional, chili, American chopsuey, Swiss steak, shepard’s pie, stew and mooseballs  in a unique tomato sauce. 

In addition, veterans and their guests enjoyed seafood chowder, home-baked  beans, and pan-fried trout donated by Mi’kmaq Farms. A wide variety of desserts was  available to compliment the meal.

In all, over 15 different members of the Presque Isle Elks donated their time to  cook for the veterans’ supper.  

According to Tina Dougherty, exalted ruler of the Presque Isle Elks, Lodge #1954,  “November is Elks’ Veterans Remembrance Month. Each Elks Lodge is mandated by the  Elks National Grand Exalted Ruler to host, at least, one special event for American military  veterans.

‘The Presque Isle Elks have been hosting a free Veterans’ Day supper for twenty  years and plan to continue to do so.”
