The Central Aroostook Humane Society has some exciting news to share. Even though “World Spay Day” is the fourth Tuesday in February — which this year falls on Feb. 24 — February is Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, and we are celebrating all month long.
All dog adoptions are half off through the month of February. We need our dogs in good and loving homes, so we are willing to go that extra mile. There is still a mandatory and refundable $100 deposit for any unaltered dogs, but this is a great opportunity to meet your next best friend.
Be sure to stop by and check out the awesome dogs that are ready to find their forever homes.
Before you adopt a dog
With that said, please do your homework when considering adopting a dog. For some reason, there has been recently a huge number of dogs needing to be surrendered. There is actually a waiting list at our shelter, and also in Houlton.
With the terribly frigid winter that we have had, there have also been animals found dropped or abandoned. Their chances of survival diminish greatly when they have no shelter, food or water and are freezing. If you happen to see a lost or stray animal, please do the right thing and call your local animal control officer or police.
Please hear this: If you cannot afford vet care, food or training, or aren’t prepared to spend the time — do not get a dog.
If you are overwhelmed, ask for help. Please do not abandon them.
Shelter workers, volunteers and rescuers are carrying heartbreak home so often. They are doing everything they can, but they cannot fix irresponsibility. So, before you adopt, make sure that you are prepared for the cost of caring, feeding and possible vet expenses.
What you will receive in exchange is a beautiful, loving soul who will be your faithful companion for years to come. This is unconditional love at its finest.
So, if you think you are ready for a pet, please stop the Central Aroostook Humane Society and check out the dogs that are up for adoption. With our half-off adoption fee, now is the time to stop in.
Please be responsible owners: spay and neuter your pets.
