Look before blaming

To the editor:

The Camp East Montana in Texas where Geraldo Lucas Campos, a convicted felon, died has created some controversy. He was reportedly in ICE custody. This would lead one to believe that it was ICE agents that were responsible for his death. Before we place blame let’s take a closer look. I noted the following in television and news reports.

Camp East Montana is reportedly run by a private contractor, Acquisition Logistics LLC. Registered as being Hispanic American owned. The employees working directly at Camp East Montana are not federal employees; they are hired by private contractors.

The purpose of this letter is not to defend anyone or place blame. Just be fair, which is my message to Mary Miller in response to her letter to the County on 2/4/26.

Mary, like so many others, claims to be heartbroken over the treatment of immigrants and citizens across the country by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Protection agents (CBP). Her letter was a one sided, in my opinion diatribe, aimed at law enforcement. Lets take a look at the other side for a change.

ICE and Customs and Border Patrol have been abused by the people who Mary calls people of compassion and courage. Here are some of the abuses that the federal agents, trying to remove criminals from our country, suffer: Rocks and other debris thrown at them. Being spit on. Paper cups filled with urine and feces thrown at them. Their cars broken into and looted. Being forced to wear masks to protect their families. All of these things, and more, while facing the dangers of removing violent criminals from our society.

I wouldn’t want their job; would you?
