Most of us can agree that having a pet around is something pretty amazing. Animals are assets in our lives and play an important role, not only in the companionship that they provide, but they can also be a benefit health wise.
Owning a pet brings with it many benefits including improved health, greater self-esteem and less loneliness than those of us who don’t have animals at home. Our pets can serve important sources of social and emotional support, and not just individuals facing significant health issues.
According to Allen R. McConnell, a researcher at Miami University in Ohio, his team “observed evidence that pet owners fared better, both in terms of well-being outcomes and individual differences, than non-owners on several dimensions. Specifically, pet owners were more physically fit, tended to have less depression, were more conscientious, were more extraverted, tended to be less fearful and tended to be less preoccupied than non-owners.”
That bit of news makes it seem obvious that pets bring joy to your home, but their impact goes beyond companionship.
Whether a playful dog or an affectionate cat, pets can improve your child’s emotional, physical and social development. Caring for a pet instills a sense of responsibility in your child. Feeding, grooming and ensuring a pet is happy and healthy all require quite a commitment. Even simple tasks like filling a water bowl or playing toss outside develops a routine that impacts how your child handles responsibilities even in other areas of their lives. Pets are truly a blessing in our lives.
