To the editor:
As a former state representative from Aroostook County, I’ve long understood that energy policy isn’t abstract. When families in our region can’t afford reliable electricity and heating, it impacts everything from our schools and local businesses, to our ability to attract new growth.
That’s why I commend Senator Susan Collins for her thoughtful approach to our state’s energy challenges. The senator understands that rural Maine has unique needs. We can’t depend solely on solutions designed for urban areas. Our communities need diverse, reliable and clean energy options.
Senator Collins has consistently advocated for practical energy policies that balance affordability with our nation’s energy independence and security. In Aroostook County, where heating costs can devastate household budgets and energy reliability directly affects our businesses, this matters tremendously.
Reliable, affordable energy is essential infrastructure for rural prosperity. When families struggle with energy costs, they have less money for groceries, healthcare, and other critical needs. When businesses face uncertain energy costs, they can’t invest in growth and good-paying jobs.
I’m grateful the senator recognizes that strengthening American energy by expanding clean energy production and working to make costs manageable for Maine families is an investment in our region’s future.
Aroostook County deserves energy solutions crafted with us in mind, not imposed from distant capitals. Senator Collins continues to deliver that kind of thoughtful leadership.
